7 Wonderful Things You Might Expect During The Second Trimester

Here are some of the wonderful things I’ve experienced in the ST (that you might too!)

Hey there, I hope you’re having a happy holiday season! I swear it always surprises me when it gets here… and then it goes by so fast!

I’m currently going on 24 weeks pregnant…and am absolutely loving this stage of pregnancy.

I’m not sure if it’s because the First Trimester (FT) was sooo… hard or because the Second Trimester (ST) truly is so much better.  So… if you’re struggling with the FT right now, don’t worry — it gets better.

I should warn that this is a generalization. Every pregnancy is different. You may have a completely different experience than me. Or, you may have been through a pregnancy before and we can reminisce over the similarities we share! Please let me know either way.  I love hearing about the experiences of moms and expectant moms!

Here are some of the wonderful things I’ve experienced in the ST (that you might too!)

1. No More Nausea

I was extremely nauseous during FT and I swear nothing helped! I tried saltines, ginger tea, gin gins (ginger candy) and even sea bands (a morning sickness relief acupressure wrist band.) These items tend to work for other women, but they didn’t for me. I constantly felt sick and constipated, which was like this crazy Catch 22 of awful. TMI? We’re talking about pregnancy folks, and modesty, well…it goes out the window.

2. I Can Drink Coffee Again!

Thanks to the nausea of the FT I wasn’t able to do one of my very favorite things — drink coffee. Even decaf. The smell even…Oh, i don’t want to think about it. But, those feelings are gone and I’m back to enjoying one cup a day! Doctors recommend that you don’t exceed 200 mg of caffeine during pregnancy. That’s about 1 cup of joe, so I try to be careful with soda, chocolate and other caffeine-filled foods throughout the day.

3. More Energy!

This is unrelated to being able to drink coffee. The fog has lifted and now, I find the time to get more and more done, especially during the day. (The early bedtime is still a thing for me.)  I’m happier. I’m full of motivation and can’t wait to get to work. It’s awesome! I honestly feel like it’s a new super power and I love everything about it! I hope you get this one!

4. Learning the Gender

Everyone is different, and you may choose to not learn the gender until birth. For me, I believe it’s going to be a surprise whenever you find out, so I definitely wanted to know ahead of time. It’s wonderful knowing we’re having a little girl. It makes the pregnancy more real and I feel closer to her.

5. Feeling the Baby

This started happening for me at around 18 weeks in. Your FT ends at around 13-15 weeks. The first movements I felt were like mind games. I wasn’t sure if it was real or not, but it was definitely a surprise and SUPER cool. Now, I feel her pretty regularly, especially right before I go to bed at night. It is the most amazing, creepy and wonderful thing! A friend of mine shared this metaphor to describe the feeling and it really fits. For those who are wondering… it kind of feels like a fish is inside you and it’s either swimming around the bucket or trying to jump out. I know that sounds weird, but honestly, it’s super cool. Scroll down to the very bottom of this post to watch our baby’s “first kicks” captured on camera!

6. The Bump

The bump is now a “BUMP”, so I don’t just feel extra chunky. The belly has popped and now I constantly find myself holding it or resting my hand on it. It’s not that I feel extra protective. It just kind of happens. I think it’s because there’s a new part of my body that I’m getting used to.

7. The Queen Treatment

PEOPLE TREAT YOU DIFFERENTLY WHEN THEY KNOW YOU’RE PREGNANT! I didn’t realize this was going to be a thing, but it totally is. People (my family, friends, strangers) go out of their way to open doors for me, to agree with my pick for dinner, etc. I think I’m winning more argument these days thanks to the baby. This last week during my flight back home, I got to cut the security line in the airport and at Starbucks! What is this? At first, I felt kind of uncomfortable with all the extra attention, but after the recent perks…just saying — I don’t hate it 🙂

There you go! Those are some of the blissful things I’ve experienced during the Second Trimester and I hope you get to experience some of them too. I’m sure there are others, but that’s what comes to mind. Let me know what your experiences are in the comment section below! Or find me on social @ChristineUncut
